The May meeting, in a new larger venue, saw another record participation of both members and non-members. Judging from our level of engagement with Corinne Staub, Etiquette Expert, modern manners and business etiquette turned out to be a timely discussion topic. Particularly pressing to our members were questions about Swiss business etiquette. We finally settled when and how to go from
‘Sie’to ‘du’in the office and how to address colleagues in an e-mail. Our presenter also led us to more abstract questions prompting discussions, which made us realize that acting in a proper way is not always as straight forward as looking in a good manners manual. When it comes to manners, it really all depends on the circumstances. In addition, hearing how the handshake originated (initially as a sign to show that one was not concealing deadly weapons) made us rethink the relevance of many customs currently used. Laughter was heard all through the evening as Corinne navigated both the topics and our questions with humour. Following the presentation, we had a very polite dinner, with our elbows properly hanging off the tables. Even though the evening went a bit long, it was fun, and we each left with something to think about, such as who will sit where at the next dinner party we host at home.
