Abrehet's Success Story

Many of you will remember that the PWG made a donation last year to support an Ethiopian shopkeeper (Abrehet Hagos) through the charity Ethiopian Enterprises founded by our speaker Lesley Stephenson. Lesley visited Abrehet earlier this month in Mekelle, Ethiopia. Here is an extract from her report for your interest.

'Abrehet's shop is at the front of her home, which saves her rental costs for a separate venue. The first thing we did on arrival was to inspect the new shelving which was purchased from the PWG donation.  The shelving is stable and solid (wooden shelves supported by solid iron fixtures)  and has allowed her to maximise her product offering. Next came the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, which Abrehet prepares wonderfully. After that, my husband Thomas checked her bookkeeping assignments from our last visit. The good news is that since attending our initial training program for several small business holders in the region, Abrehet's shop has started to make a profit. Even better, since the shelving was added and extra supplies brought in, that profit has increased considerably.  She now understands the concept of depreciation, and is putting money aside to buy a new fridge when her current fridge retires. In fact, she's doing so well that she has also purchased a market-place stall which she is renting out to create additional income.

Abrehet's story is a success story, ladies. She sends you her best wishes and thanks,
to which I add my own.

Lesley thank you for sharing this info with us! It is so nice to hear that donations do make a difference for some people, who were unfortunately not provided with the best opportunities in life!
